I’ll be the first to admit – I’m not a natural blogger. If you’ve stumbled across this corner of the internet and read any of my previous posts, thank you, and I apologize for my inconsistency. What started as a commitment to post regularly slowly faded into the background as I continued pursuing my goal of building wealth for my family. But a lot has changed since my last update, and I’m excited to share the journey with you.
After years of searching for a way to create extra income, I’ve finally found my niche. While it may not be the road to millions just yet, the possibilities are wide open, and I’m all in.
It all started when I found myself scrolling through YouTube, coming across videos of resellers showing off their thrift store hauls and talking about the impressive profits they were making. My first thought was, Why haven’t I tried this? So, I dropped everything, did my research, and jumped aboard the reseller ship. I spent countless hours learning from all the self-proclaimed masters on YouTube.
In March 2024, I invested around $3,000 from my tax refund to launch my business. Most of that went toward equipment – metal shelves, lighting, a camera, polybags, and boxes. Honestly, none of it was absolutely necessary, but as a bit of a perfectionist, I felt like I needed it all before I could even start. With the setup complete, I used the remaining money to buy inventory – anything I thought could turn a profit: clothes, gadgets, toys, plushies, you name it.
By the 90-day mark, I achieved Top Seller status on eBay, and I’d already made back almost half of my initial investment! This was really working. Even better, it satisfied three of my ADHD/autistic needs: I got to shop frequently at yard sales and thrift stores, organize everything to my liking, and channel my perfectionism into photographing and listing items (though I’m working on not being too much of a perfectionist).
In September, my husband and I were posting so many items to our separate eBay stores that I thought it would make sense to combine forces. Boy, was that a mistake! When I say that decision nearly led to a divorce after 10 years of marriage, I’m not exaggerating. We both have dominant personalities and like to do things our own way, and sharing control of the business quickly led to constant arguments. We clashed over everything: sourcing inventory, taking photos, pricing items, and even how to respond to customer messages. After a few mistakes on his part that cost me a couple of hundred dollars, we both agreed that if we wanted to stay married, we could never work together.
So, we split our stores again, but the damage was done. My business took a hit, and I had to rethink my entire approach. I decided to rebrand, shifting from a “sell everything” store to a more sophisticated shop focused on men’s and women’s business casual and professional wear. I spent about three weeks clearing out anything that didn’t fit the new vision before relaunching my store on October 19, 2024.
As of today, I’ve already made a couple of sales, and I’m confident that once I start listing more consistently, the business will pick back up. At my peak, I was generating almost as much income as my husband’s full-time job, and I’m determined not only to meet that milestone again but to double it in the coming year.
This business is just a stepping stone to something bigger. While I don’t expect it to make me wealthy on its own, it’s laying the foundation for future opportunities. My goal is to generate enough profit – around $10k – to reinvest in other income streams, preferably passive ones. I’m particularly interested in getting into rental properties, though I have a lot to learn in that area.
Who knows what the future holds, but one thing I’m certain of is that with the right mindset, anything is possible. I’ll keep pushing forward, overcoming obstacles one day at a time, until I reach my ultimate goals.
